Justin Case

Justin Case or to bestow the full title Justin Case Itmaybe...  is inspired by the objects retained after ceasing to use them, because: we may find use for all or some part of it,  the cost in money, time and effort outweigh the advantages of removal, or we have some form of sentimental attachment to the now unusable item.

This is a new project inspired by moving into a small planned village near the north Aberdeenshire coast where the original properties were laid out to provide sufficient space for a sizeable workshop and land for cultivation or rearing animals. When we moved in the house had various old items left around - traces of the lives of previous occupiers, including an old shed that was held up by the contents. Unfortunately a great deal ended up being recycled. However, this was a good place to start the planning process along with those pieces of machinery left in odd corners around the village.

But what better way to undertake this piece of work than using an old 1950s Zeiss Nettar camera I bought a few years ago for £10 along with some old film. So these first images have been taken with an old digital camera and 'pancake' lens to show the equipment. I will also be using a hand held light meter.  With five rolls of colour film that expired in 2005 and one of unknown vintage a maximum  of 60 images may be possible. I also have some polaroid film, both old and new. The film had not been stored correctly in a fridge although all but one are in sealed packs. I am expecting there to be colour changes at least, with possibly some chemical degrading taking place. The film will be scanned and probably worked on digitally...

Update 25 November 2019 - the chemical pods on the old colour packs of film had dried out and came off the print when it was pulled out of the camera. Test shots on the new film with an old polaroid camera showed uneven development - possibly issues with the rollers. A further experiment showed that the modern polaroid film does not lift as the old one did and dries out and curls up over a few days when transferred to art paper.

Update 02 January 2019 - visited some possible sites with the iPhone while walking the dog and these images are shown below to give an idea of the project.

MARTIN's Gallery of Ongoing Work

This gallery contains work in progress. The images on show here are working towards this and the end results may be book, a set of cards or an exhibition.
Bide Awhile
Seats, benches, swings and even on the ground... a place to wait, to contemplate, to meet, to talk, or to eat. Occupied or placed alone within the landscape: waiting for a visitor. These places are unique within the period of time you observe them. Often seats are provided in memory of someone or something, as detailed by the small plaque, they are a place to be enjoyed...

Sometimes they are occupied...
The compass direction is from the sitter's perspective.
